Finding Nemo and Sociolinguistic Variation: Strategies in Italian Dubbing

Facing a reality in which everything is filled with foreign impulses, this thesis aims at analyzing the different challenges that translators face when dealing with an audiovisual text. In this particular case, the focus will be on the film Finding Nemo (2003) and how it has been adapted to Italian. The first chapter provides a background on the history and theories of Audiovisual Translation, the second chapter contains all the information relative to the film and some elements on the differences between English regional dialects such as Australian English. The third chapter consists of the contrastive analysis of the scripts, which enables us to make some observation on the translation strategies used and on Italian dubbing and its tendencies. In particular, the attention has been drawn to how Sociolinguistic variation is rendered (or not) in the Italian version of the film.

Partendo da una realtà odierna ricca di prodotti culturali che arrivano dall'estero, questa tesi punta ad analizzare le sfide che i traduttori affrontano quando si occupano di un testo audiovisivo. In questo caso, il focus sarà posto sulla traduzione Italiana del film Finding Nemo/Alla ricerca di Nemo (2003). Il primo capitolo offre una visione d'insieme sulla teoria e la storia della traduzione audiovisiva, il secondo capitolo contiene le informazioni essenziali sul film e alcuni cenni sulle diverse varietà dialettali dell'inglese, ad esempio l'Inglese Australiano. Il terzo capitolo presenta l'analisi contrastiva dei copioni Italiano/Inglese che permette di fare delle osservazioni sulle strategie di traduzione utilizzate, sul Doppiaggio Italiano e le sue tendenze. In particolare l'attenzione è posta sulla traduzione in Italiano della Varietà Sociolinguistica della lingua.
