I personaggi di Enid, Vivien e Guinevere negli Idylls of the King di Lord Alfred Tennyson

The main subject which I have analized deals with the collection Idylls of the King by Alfred Tennyson, and the social, economic and historical implication which have contributed to the stylistic, structural and thematical choices. I have decided to focus my thesis on the study of the social and economic condition of the Victorian Age, in order to find the elements which could have influenced some aspects of the idylls. I have noticed some differences in terms of the representation of the stories, thanks to the examination of the different historical sources of the Arthurian material, and the analysis of its temporal and spatial evolution - starting by the Welsh legends and the French novel of Chrétien de Troyes to Malory and Tennyson -, which could have influenced some basilar changes observed in the idylls. The main aim ¿ after having carefully examined the historical and economic context, especially for what concerns women's condition ¿ is the in-depth analysis of three female characters which have particularly stricken me reading the whole collection, and which ¿ in my opinion ¿ could represent some of the ideals spread in the Victiorian society, as the angel in the house (represented by Enid, a patient and true wife), the femme fatale (Vivien, which is very skilled in seduction and lying), and the third figure, which can represent both of them in a more complete way, Guinevere. The fundamental chapter focuses on the study and the interpretation of every single idyll in which the three characters have a part, in order to reveal a more specific characterization and description. Concerning Enid, the two idylls which have been chosen describe the relationship with her husband, which obliges her to go on a perilous trip as a result of the assumed betrayal of his wife. The woman is represented as a faithful wife, and she is ready to do anything to redeem herself on front of her husband. Vivien too is represented in a relationship with a man, but the difference between her and Enid is accentuated, because the emphasis of the author is on her skills in the art of seduction and untruth: in fact, she is able to seduce Merlin and to entrap him with a secret spell. Regarding to Guinevere, the study of her character leads to the review of almost all of the idylls, because she is represented in a scattered way in many situations, and she is a character whose presence is felt through all the sequence of events. She represents a more complete description of the two previous characters, and the author has been able to make a more variable and introspective portrait of a very powerful character: we can see her like Enid, pure and innocent, when she is married to Arthur; she is sensual and seductive in the relationship with Lancelot, so sudden that she is able to make him succumb, in spite of his sense of honor and his faithfulness to the King. In the end of the idyll dedicated, she is penitent and regretful, after her escape with Lancelot and the retirement in a nunnery, even if Arthur found her and forgave her, because she sees the consequences of her act of unfaithfulness, which led to the war between the king and his first knight. My thesis aspires to represent three particular characters in their entirety, both for what they symbolize, and for their influence on them acted by the historical and social condition of the Victiorian age, and to analyze the connection between the ideals they embody and those of the Victorian society.

L'argomento principale preso in analisi nella mia tesi riguarda la raccolta degli Idilli del re di Tennyson, e le implicazioni sociali, economiche e storiche che hanno contribuito alle scelte stilistiche, strutturali e di argomento del componimento. Ho scelto di focalizzarmi sulle condizioni sociali ed economiche dell'età vittoriana, per cercare gli elementi che avrebbero potuto influenzare l'autore ed alcuni aspetti degli idilli. Dopo aver esaminato le fonti storiche e storiografiche, ed aver seguito non solo lo sviluppo temporale della materia arturiana, ma anche il suo sviluppo spaziale, partendo dalle leggende gallesi e dal romanzo francese di Chrétien de Troyes fino ad arrivare a Malory e Tennyson, ho potuto notare alcune differenze nella rappresentazione delle vicende e dei personaggi, che potrebbero aver influenzato dei cambiamenti basilari, riscontrabili all'interno degli idilli. Lo scopo principale, dopo aver esaminato attentamente il contesto sociale ed economico, specialmente per quanto riguarda la condizione delle donne, è appunto l'analisi approfondita di tre personaggi femminili che mi hanno particolarmente colpito lungo tutta la raccolta, e che a mio parere potrebbero rappresentare alcuni fra gli ideali presenti nella società vittoriana, come ad esempio l'angel in the house (rappresentato da Enid, moglie devota e paziente), la femme fatale (Vivien, la quale è esperta nell'arte della seduzione e della menzogna) e la figura che le rappresenta entrambe, ma con sfaccettature più complete, Ginevra. Il capitolo principale si incentra dunque nell'analisi approfondita di ogni idillio in cui le tre donne si presentano, in modo da fornire una caratterizzazione ed una descrizione più specifica. Per quanto riguarda Enid, sono stati considerati i due idilli in cui viene descritto il suo rapporto con il marito, che la obbliga a varie peripezie a causa della sua presunta infedeltà; la donna si presenta quindi come moglie devota e pronta a tutto pur di riscattarsi di fronte al marito. Anche Vivien viene presa in esame nel rapporto con un uomo, ma in questo caso ne vengono sottolineate le arti della menzogna e della seduzione: ella infatti, riesce a sedurre Merlino e a intrappolarlo. Per quanto riguarda Ginevra, l'analisi ad essa correlata porta a prendere in esame quasi tutti gli idilli, in quanto la figura si presenta sporadicamente in molte situazioni, ed è un personaggio che aleggia nel corso di tutta la vicenda narrata. La donna viene rappresentata con una descrizione più completa delle due precedenti, e permette all'autore di fare un ritratto molto più variegato e introspettivo: la vediamo pura e innocente quando sta per avvicinarsi ad Artù, innamorata di lui anche se non lo ha mai visto; sensuale e femminile nel rapporto con Lancillotto, tanto da farlo capitolare malgrado il suo senso dell'onore e la sua fedeltà al re, ed infine contrita e pentita, dopo la fuga con Lancillotto e il ritiro in convento, a causa distruzione da lei provocata, che porta alla guerra tra il re ed il suo primo cavaliere, nonostante il perdono di Artù. La mia analisi punta dunque a raffigurare nella loro interezza tre personaggi molto particolari, sia per ciò che simboleggiano, sia per l'influenza che hanno avuto su di essi le condizioni storico-sociali dell'Inghilterra vittoriana, e analizzare il nesso tra gli ideali che esse incarnano e quelli della società vittoriana.
