Shakespeare a fumetti: The Sandman di Neil Gaiman tra letteratura e cultura pop

In my dissertation I discuss the problem of the artistic and literary value of comics as a specific genre by studying Gaiman's adaptations of two Shakespearian plays. After a brief survey of the main features of comics understood as a form of popular culture, I analyse ¿A Midsummer Night's Dream¿ and ¿The Tempest¿, comic books written by Neil Gaiman and based on Shakespeare's works. The author connects the opposite poles of reality and artistic illusion and the values of private life and literary career, taking as a starting point Shakespeare's literary productions and some events of the playwright's life, such as they are imagined by Gaiman himself. He recreates the atmosphere and the themes of the two Shakespearian plays, combining them with a biographical storyline of his own invention. The result is a pair of tales in which the literary topic and the ¿popular¿ form merge successfully, testifying to the artistic possibilities of comics, which allow artists to produce and reproduce efficaciously ¿high¿ literature and not only texts of mere entertainment.

La dissertazione affronta il problema del valore artistico e letterario del genere fumetto, attraverso lo studio degli adattamenti di due drammi di Shakespeare. Partendo da una rapida panoramica sulle caratteristiche principali del fumetto all'interno della cultura popolare, si passa ad analizzare ¿A Midsummer Night's Dream¿ e ¿The Tempest¿, fumetti scritti da Neil Gaiman e basati sulle omonime opere. L'autore mette in relazione i poli opposti della realtà e dell'illusione artistica e i valori della vita familiare e della carriera letteraria, prendendo spunto dalla produzione letteraria di Shakespeare e da alcuni eventi della vita del drammaturgo, immaginati da Gaiman stesso. Egli ricrea l'atmosfera e le tematiche dei due drammi shakespeariani saldandole a una linea narrativa biografica di sua invenzione. Il risultato sono due racconti in cui l'argomento letterario e la forma ¿popolare¿ si combinano con successo, a testimoniare come le possibilità artistiche del genere fumetto consentano di produrre e riprodurre efficacemente letteratura ¿alta¿ e non solo testi di puro intrattenimento.
