Wood decay fungi cause major economic losses in Europe every year. This thesis aims to review some of the main methods used to control wood decay fungi in urban sites for public safety and in managed forest stands. Attention is drawn to biological control and its application against H. annosum s.l. Conclusions indicate that: I) biological control of wood decay fungi is an eco-sustainable and promising tool but further research is necessary to achieve reliable results; II) chemical control of H. annosum s.l. with urea has moderate environmental impact and remains a cheap and efficient option in Alpine forest stands.

Abstract

Wood decay fungi cause major economic losses in Europe every year. This thesis aims to review some of the main methods used to control wood decay fungi in urban sites for public safety and in managed forest stands. Attention is drawn to biological control and its application against H. annosum s.l. Conclusions indicate that: I) biological control of wood decay fungi is an eco-sustainable and promising tool but further research is necessary to achieve reliable results; II) chemical control of H. annosum s.l. with urea has moderate environmental impact and remains a cheap and efficient option in Alpine forest stands.
