The research inspects the artistic mobility phenomenon in Europe from a multifaceted approach: initially historical, going deep in artists' movement from the origins to the latest developments. Here the aim is to get acknowledgement of intimate motivations driving artists transfers, marking the trajectory of its evolution. We complete this section making some distinctions, defining what mobility is and what mobility is not nowadays. Then the approach becomes more sociological. Indeed, the second part is dedicated to mobility stakeholders: organizations, residencies and artists. Here an interpretative framework discerns various typologies within every single group, even underlining the way they interact each other. In chapter 3, starting from a survey on European policies, we present an overview on the presence of mobility in programs and strategies in the past and in the next years. In that section we proceed from general to particular, from European level to city level. When we get the city level dimension, we present questionnaires results, shifting the approach to a statistical-economical one. Overall are two questionnaires, which allow us crossing city and artists opinions on mobility matter. Initially we explain the methodological approach adopted both in the city interview and in the artist questionnaire. Then we analyse firstly city information, bringing to light goals, strategies and fundings strictly connected to mobility. Finally, in the last chapter, we present the results of 110 artists' responses. From there, 30 questions able us to examine in depth artists needs and opinions. After a descriptive analysis on basic information contents, we go on with a second more complex look, crossing basic and mobility information to evaluate deeper the existing relationships between subsamples and the amount of ¿artists on mobility population¿. Doing that we concentrate on interesting features emerged, we underline incongruences and empty spaces potentially useful for policy evaluations and future strategies.

Abstract

Doing that we concentrate on interesting features emerged, we underline incongruences and empty spaces potentially useful for policy evaluations and future strategies.
