Excelsior: il problema educativo in Quintino Sella

Quintino Sella is certainly one of the greatest personalities of the period immediately following the unification of Italy: as well as deputy, three times Finance minister and head of the historical Right, he was a scientist in the field of crystallography and president of the Academy of the Lincei, professor, inventor and organizer of culture, business owner, mountaineer and founder of CAI. Under each of these profiles his figure has been greatly deepened by scholars: this work is aimed instead at something that, in my opinion, does not appear to have been widely discussed (at least in perspective targeted). This is the profile of Quintino Sella educator. In fact, the Biella's statesman lobbied hard throughout his life to educate himself first and then the other: from family to friends, from politicians until Italians. In this research I have therefore attempted to recover, on precise historical basis, his ideas on global training of the person, which appear extremely current and therefore these can provide important educational ideas to man of the XXI century. Of the four chapters, the first is devoted to the formation of Sella, in the aspects of education received in the family, of self-education and its cultural background; the second concern his vision about the school education and the dissemination of culture, as well as its commitment to the development of scientific research; in the third chapter I have covered the main themes, in my opinion, of this research: education to ethics in private life as in the social, to morality in politics and finally to religious feeling; the fourth chapter finally shows - thanks to some unpublished documents of local history of Valsesia - as the attention of Sella talk not only to the aspects intellectual, moral and spiritual of the person but also to those that relate to the health of the body to be protected and also increased in particular with mountaineering. All these profiles appear closely connected with what can be considered the synthesis of the entire educational thought of Quintino Sella: Excelsior, "higher".

Quintino Sella è certamente una delle più grandi personalità del periodo immediatamente successivo all'unità d'Italia: oltre che deputato, per tre volte ministro delle Finanze e capo della Destra storica, fu scienziato nel campo della cristallografia e presidente dell'Accademia dei Lincei, professore, inventore e organizzatore di cultura, imprenditore, alpinista e fondatore del CAI. Sotto ciascuno di questi profili la sua figura è stata notevolmente approfondita dagli studiosi: questo lavoro si rivolge invece a un aspetto che, a mio giudizio, non appare essere stato ampiamente esaminato (quantomeno in un'ottica mirata). Si tratta del profilo di Quintino Sella educatore. Infatti lo statista biellese si impegnò intensamente durante tutta la sua vita ad educare dapprima se stesso e poi gli altri: dai familiari agli amici, dai politici sino agli italiani. In questa ricerca si è tentato dunque di recuperare, su precise basi storiche, le sue idee sulla formazione globale della persona, che appaiono estremamente attuali e dunque tali da poter fornire importanti spunti educativi all'uomo del XXI secolo. Dei quattro capitoli, il primo è dedicato alla formazione di Sella, sotto gli aspetti dell'educazione ricevuta in famiglia, dell'auto-educazione e della sua preparazione culturale e scolastica; il secondo tratta della sua visione circa l'istruzione scolastica e la diffusione della cultura, oltre che del suo impegno ai fini dello sviluppo della ricerca scientifica; nel terzo capitolo sono stati affrontati i temi a mio avviso principali della ricerca: l'educazione all'etica nella vita privata come in quella sociale, alla moralità in politica e infine al sentire religioso; il quarto capitolo mostra infine - anche grazie ad alcuni documenti inediti di storia locale della Valsesia - come l'attenzione di Sella si rivolga non solo agli aspetti intellettuali, morali e spirituali della persona ma pure a quelli che attengono alla salute del corpo, da salvaguardare e accrescere anche e in particolare con la pratica dell'alpinismo. Tutti questi profili appaiono tra loro strettamente connessi tramite quella che può ritenersi la sintesi dell'intero pensiero educativo di Quintino Sella: Excelsior, "più in alto".
