Tradurre Nineteen Eighty-Four

The purpose of the present thesis is to propose a new and revolutionary translation of George Orwell's last masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first presents the translation of the novel and the concomitant comparison with the two previous Italian versions, respectively translated in 1950 by Gabriele Baldini and in 2000 by Stefano Manferlotti; the second part deals with the author's biography, the synopsis and the analysis of the novel and, lastly, the translation theories and strategies, which have been used during the translation process. The present thesis has achieved the desired result, namely to revolutionize a translation - and in particular some expressions coined by Orwell - which is so deeply rooted in the Italian collective imagination to have been considered "untouchable" for years, in the name of a greater fidelity to the original text and especially to the author's intentions and style.

Lo scopo della presente tesi è quello di proporre una nuova e rivoluzionaria traduzione dell'ultimo capolavoro di George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four. La tesi si divide in due parti: la prima presenta la traduzione del romanzo e la comparazione contestuale con le due versioni italiane precedenti, tradotte rispettivamente nel 1950 da Gabriele Baldini e nel 2000 da Stefano Manferlotti; la seconda parte illustra, invece, la biografia dell'autore, la sinossi e l'analisi del romanzo e, infine, le teorie e le strategie traduttive utilizzate durante il processo di traduzione. La presente tesi ha raggiunto il risultato prefissato, ovvero quello di stravolgere una traduzione ¿ e in particolare alcune espressioni coniate da Orwell ¿ talmente radicata nell'immaginario comune italiano da essere stata considerata ¿intoccabile¿ per anni, in nome di una maggiore fedeltà al testo originale e, soprattutto, alle intenzioni e allo stile dell'autore.
