Dessau Dancers: traduzione e adattamento per la sottotitolazione

It has been a while since subtitling, next to synchronization, has started to play an important role in audiovisual translation: this work deals exactly with this subject, in specific with the subtitling of Dessau Dancers (2014), a German movie. The most important question is not only connected to a certain kind of difficulty in translation, but the goal is here to look at the bigger picture, presenting the complete translation of the movie, preceded by a theoretical part. This thesis consists of three chapters. The first one presents a brief history of subtitling and then moves to the most important specifics and restraints of it, such as standing time, positioning on screen, wording of the subtitles etc. Even if this chapter can be considered as the theoretical one of this thesis, the attempt here was to describe the most important rules in the most practical way, so that the reader, or the translator, can apply them in the easiest way. The second chapter deals with the critics, that have been moved against the movie, as well as its plot and its most important characters. Here is also included the complete screenplay, composed by four columns: the first one shows the speaker, the second the German sentence, the third the literal translation and the last one the final translation adjusted for subtitling. The third and last chapter, which is perhaps the most interesting one, describes the analysis of the translation: in this part problems and difficulties of the process of translation with focus on the decisional strategies occurred are precisely analyzed, as well as a specification of the strategies used.

Questo lavoro si propone di presentare integralmente la traduzione e l'adattamento per la sottotitolazione del film tedesco Dessau Dancers (2014). Esso consta di tre capitoli: il primo presenta la teoria della sottotitolazione e ne specifica le limitazioni e regole principali, cercando di trasmettere le informazioni nel modo più pratico possibile, di modo che possano essere applicate con facilità. Il secondo presenta invece la trama del film e i suoi personaggi: qui è stato inserito anche il copione integrale, con indicato interlocutore, battuta originale, traduzione letterale e traduzione adattata. Il terzo capitolo contiene infine l'analisi della traduzione, in particolare delle strategie decisionali adottate e delle difficoltà incontrate.
