Analisi di mediazione: un'applicazione in epidemiologia

Mediation is the phenomenon by which a cause influence an intermediate variable , called mediator , and the change in the intermediate variable is to influence the outcome . Mediation analysis attempt to asses what portion of the effect of a cause on the outcome is operating through the intermediate variable and what portion might be through other mechanisms or pathways. In this work we will study theoretical aspects of this branch of statistics and then move on to see an application in epidemiology . In particular through analysis of data we will try to understand the role of mediators in the association between the Mediterranean diet and colon cancer.

La mediazione è il fenomeno per mezzo del quale una causa influenza una variabile intermedia, detta mediatore, e il cambiamento nella variabile intermedia va a influenzare l'outcome. Fare analisi di mediazione significa quindi andare a stimare quale porzione dell'effetto di una causa sull'outcome agisce in realtà attraverso la variabile intermedia e quale porzione agisce tramite altri meccanismi o altri percorsi. Nella tesi verranno approfonditi gli aspetti teorici di questa branca della statistica per poi passare a vedere un'applicazione in epidemiologia. In particolare tramite analisi di dati si cercherà di capire il ruolo dei mediatori nell'associazione tra dieta mediterranea e tumore al colon.
