Il dark tourism: la storia, le forme e l'etica

The subject of the thesis is dark tourism, which means tourism that involves places with a history linked to death. This paper presents its history, inserted in the context of the relationship between anthropology and tourism, the main forms with insights into the most important realities and personal reflections on the issues pertaining ethical debate that sees death at the center used as a gimmick to create a tourist attraction. In the first chapter we talk about the relationship between anthropology and tourism, analyzing with a critical eye the recent situation ; after this, a modest historical excursus introduces the main theme of the thesis, of which in the next subchapter are categorized the most famous modes. Last part talks about slum tourism, an environment full of controversies and strong realities. The central part is dedicated to three forms of macabre tourism originating from the violence of men against other men, women, children and even entire ethnic groups. The terrorist attacks, genocides and areas of action of serial killers have been rediscovered as generators of tourist flows, more or less consistent and certainly driven by different motivations. The third chapter is the result of a personal search: the answers to an anonymous form that I sent to people from different social contexts. The data collected allow a reflection on the welcome that dark tourism receives.

L’argomento della tesi di laurea è il dark tourism ovvero il turismo che vede protagonisti i luoghi con una storia legata alla morte. In questo elaborato viene presentata la sua storia, inserita nel contesto di relazione tra l’antropologia e il turismo, le forme principali con approfondimenti sulle realtà più importanti e riflessioni personali sui temi appartenenti dibattito etico che vede al centro la morte usata come espediente per creare un’attrazione turistica. Nel primo capitolo si parla della relazione tra l’antropologia e il turismo, analizzando con occhio critico la situazione recente, dopodiché uno modesto excursus storico introduce il tema principale della tesi, di cui nel sottocapitolo successivo sono categorizzate le modalità più famose. In chiusura si parla di slum tourism, ambiente ricco di controversie e realtà forti. La parte centrale è dedicata a tre forme di turismo macabro originate dalla violenza di uomini verso altri uomini, donne, bambini e persino intere etnie. Gli attentati terroristici, i genocidi e le aree di azione dei serial killer sono stati riscoperti come generatori di flussi turistici, più o meno consistenti e sicuramente mossi da motivazioni diverse. Il terzo capitolo è il risultato di una ricerca personale: le risposte ad un questionario anonimo che ho inviato a persone appartenenti a diversi contesti sociali. I dati raccolti permettono una riflessione in merito all’ accoglienza che il dark tourism riscuote.
