Climate change presents an increasingly urgent threat, demanding comprehensive strategies to mitigate its impact. One such strategy is climate litigation, particularly against companies which have significantly contributed to climate change, to hold them accountable. This thesis investigates the role of climate litigation in addressing corporate responsibility for climate impacts. It explores the legal framework governing climate litigation and examines landmark cases such as Milieudefensie v Royal Dutch Shell. The thesis also delves into the challenges plaintiffs face in these cases, including defendants questioning the court's role, establishing legal standing, and proving causation with the support of climate science. Through a detailed analysis of these elements, this thesis seeks to contribute to the understanding of climate litigation’s complexities and its potential as a tool for promoting environmental accountability and justice
