Severe obesity is a multifactorial disease characterised by a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 40. This disease needs of a multidisciplinary approach because causes many problems such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and low quality of life. Methods : Between October 2008 and January 2009 (time T0) 25 patients (19 women and 6 men) , with a mean age of 41 years ( range 24-59) and BMI 42,04 (range 32,1-53,2) underwent the endoscopic bariatric procedure of Intragastric Balloon (BIB). To evaluate the quality of life the questionnaire SF-36 (Short Form) was administered . After 6 months of treatment between April 2009 and July 2009 ( time T1) the BIB was removed and the 25 patients completed again the SF ¿ 36. Results : The 25 patients before undergoing Intragastric Balloon have a lower quality of life at T0 compared with quality of life of normal subjects, because of low quality of interpersonal relationships and performance levels in all areas of life. Moreover, the various attempts which have made us choose this endoscopic bariatric procedure, may cause a high level of frustration caused by the side effects, which can turn into a low quality of life. After 6 months,T1, of BIB treatment, the quality of life of these patients improved in both physical and mental health areas. The 25 patients without intragastric balloon have almost the same quality of life compared with quality of life of normal subjects and obtain also a weight loss of 10,22 kg (range 2,9-17,9). Moreover 4 out of 25 patients decreased the medical therapy for diabetes . Conclusions : During the 6 months of BIB treatment the weight decreased of 9 % compared to initial weight and the quality of life improved in all areas although the BIB side effects.
