The aim of this study is to investigate the relations between climatic variables and mass balance of Alpine glaciers. First, I analyzed the mass balance records of Timorion glacier, located in Valsavarenche, Valle d'Aosta, Italy, and four different weather stations close to it. Secondly, I investigated mass balance series of more than 30 glaciers distributed over the Alps, covering the period 1950 to 2013. I have shown that these series are related to monthly values of temperature and precipitation of the gridded data sets HISTALP, CRU and E-OBS. Finally I have developed multilinear regression models that provide satisfactory out-of-sample prediction of mass balance series.
