Oltre il sipario: il contributo di Olympe de Gouges alla rappresentazione delle donne nel teatro francese di fine Settecento

Author of the 'Declaration of Woman and the Citizen', Olympe de Gouges was a prolific author of political writings, novels and plays during the French Revolution. Through theatre in particular, the playwright sought to combat the privileges and prejudices of race, class and gender prevalent in the Old Regime. The aim of this thesis is to analyse how the female condition in the 18th century is described within the plays of the Montauban author. In the first chapter, we briefly analyse her biography and the ways in which she tried to represent herself, in an attempt to be perceived as a femme des lettres, through concrete actions such as choosing her own name, letters and plays. In the second chapter, the evolution of the female condition in the 18th century is described, starting with the situation of the Ancient Regime and then highlighting the changes that occurred with the Revolution; in particular, the changes that occurred within marriage and the institution of divorce are examined. In the last chapter, the comedies Homme Généreux, Moliere chez Ninon, le siècle des grandes hommes, Le philosophe corrigè and La nécessité du divorce are presented to analyse how within them De Gouges portrayed the condition of women, the concept of marriage, divorce and the recognition of children. Through her writings, the author succeeded in highlighting the contradictions of an era that, while describing itself as revolutionary in the field of individual rights and freedoms, nevertheless reinforced the privileges of some.

Autrice della “Dichiarazione della donna e della cittadina”, Olympe de Gouges è stata una prolifica autrice di scritti politici, romanzi e commedie durante la Rivoluzione Francese. Tramite il teatro in particolare, la drammaturga ha cercato di combattere i privilegi e i pregiudizi di razza, di ceto e di genere, diffusi nell’Antico Regime. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è analizzare come viene descritta la condizione femminile nel Settecento all’interno delle pièce teatrali dell’autrice di Montauban. Nel primo capitolo viene analizzata brevemente la sua biografia e le modalità con cui l’autrice ha cercato di rappresentare sé stessa, nel tentativo di farsi percepire come una femme des lettres, tramite azioni concrete, come la scelta del proprio nome, le lettere e le pièce teatrali. Nel secondo capitolo invece viene descritta l’evoluzione della condizione femminile nel Settecento, partendo dalla situazione dell’Ancient Regime per poi mettere in luce i cambiamenti avvenuti con la Rivoluzione; in particolare vengono esaminati i mutamenti avvenuti all’interno del matrimonio e l’istituzione del divorzio. Nell’ultimo capitolo vengono presentate le commedie Homme Généreux, Moliere chez Ninon, le siècle des grandes hommes, Le philosophe corrigè e La nécessité du divorce per analizzare come all’interno di esse De Gouges abbia ritratto la condizione della donna, il concetto di matrimonio, di divorzio e del riconoscimento dei figli. Con i suoi scritti l’autrice è riuscita a mettere in luce le contraddizioni di un’epoca che si pur definendosi rivoluzionaria nel campo dei diritti e delle libertà individuali, ha comunque rafforzato i privilegi di alcuni.
