Per la Famiglia Garibaldi. Sull’Album di firme in morte dell’Eroe donato alla figlia Teresita e conservato al Museo del Risorgimento di Torino

2 June 1882: Giuseppe Garibaldi dies in Caprera. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to recording the demonstrations of national condolence, with analysis of the newspapers of the time and the testimonies of those who were on the island at the time of death; an in-depth study was given to the testamentary provisions of the General, who had expressed the desire to be cremated, and which were not respected, seeking the reasons also in the national debate that arose around this affair. Immediately after the death, an initiative to collect signatures to participate in the condolence was promoted by a milanese publisher, Giuseppe Cozzi, who distributed a form - together with his periodical "Il Garibaldino" - in which citizens were invited to leave testimony. All the collected forms were then bound and donated by the publisher to the General's daughter, Teresita. In 2022, this album of signatures arrived as a gift to the Museo del Risorgimento in Torino through the donation of Decio and Stefano Canzio (descendants of Stefano Canzio, husband of Teresita Garibaldi). The paper examined in depth the publisher's methods of collecting signatures and the content of the Album, providing a general overview of the signatories (individuals, workers' societies or military and veteran associations), identifying their particularities and then carrying out a quantitative analysis. of the data, aggregating them on the basis of geographical areas.

2 giugno 1882: Giuseppe Garibaldi muore a Caprera. La prima parte della tesi è dedicata alla registrazione delle dimostrazioni di cordoglio nazionale, con analisi dei giornali del tempo e delle testimonianze di chi si trovava sull’isola al momento del decesso; è stato riservato un approfondimento alle disposizioni testamentarie del Generale, che aveva espresso la volontà di essere cremato, e che non furono rispettate, cercandone le motivazioni anche nel dibattito nazionale sorto intorno a questa vicenda. Immediatamente dopo la morte viene promossa una iniziativa di raccolta firme di partecipazione al cordoglio da parte di un editore milanese, Giuseppe Cozzi, che distribuisce un modulo – unitamente al suo periodico “Il Garibaldino” – nel quale i cittadini sono invitati a lasciare testimonianza. Tutti i moduli raccolti sono stati poi rilegati e donati dall’editore alla figlia del Generale, Teresita. Nel 2022, questo Album di firme è giunto in dono al Museo del Risorgimento di Torino tramite la donazione Decio e Stefano Canzio (discendenti da Stefano Canzio, marito di Teresita Garibaldi e garibaldino). L’elaborato ha approfondito le modalità di raccolta delle firme da parte dell’editore e il contenuto dell’Album fornendo uno sguardo generale sui soggetti firmatari (singoli, società operaie oppure associazioni di militari e veterani) individuandone le particolarità e poi facendo una analisi quantitativa dei dati, aggregandoli sulla base delle zone geografiche.
