Abstract

In the first chapter, the existence, relevance and purpose of Aviation English will be analysed. The need to avoid ambiguity in communication is the reason why the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) decided that all crew members and air traffic controllers should speak English to make requests and provide instructions. Even though ICAO requires aviation workers to possess a specific proficiency level in English, some minor lexical differences are encountered according to the variety of English spoken in certain geographical areas.
