The study of the image of the Chinese is a focal point in Chinese academia, yet there remains ample room for research on scientific visual materials. This thesis aims to analyze representations of and on the Chinese body through illustrations found in early Italian anthropological introductory textbooks from 1878 to 1945. Utilizing Maria Gulia Dondero's enunciation theory, Stuart Hall's otherness theory, and Bruno Latour's science studies on visual images, the author explores the problematic positioning of the Chinese in racial classification, strategies employed in visually racializing the Chinese body, and the Othering gaze concealed within the textbooks.
