Il viaggio nel tempo in Doctor Who

This dissertetion analyses the theme of time travel, specifically in the television series Doctor Who. To talk about Doctor Who it is necessary to start from the context in which the series initiates in 1963: the BBC of which Doctor Who has become one of the most iconic and longest running programmes. The dissetation follows a chronological order in analyzing the development of the series from its beginnings to the present days, with its various producers and actors, its different technologies, with its ups and downs, including the long interruption from 1989 to 2005. The focus of the dissertation is the time travel of Doctor Who, the main character, often known simply as “the Doctor”. TheDoctor is an alien, Lord of Time, coming from tha planet of Gallifrey, who travels through time and space aboard his TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), a spaceship disguised as a blue British police telephone booth. The main themes of the series are taken into consideration and, for this purpose, two emblematic stories of Doctor Who are examined in depth: a journey into the past with the serial “The massacre of Saint Bartholomew’s Eve” (1966) and a journey into the future with the episode “The Beast Below” (2010). The analysis of time travel does not end with the British television series but extends to nineteenth-twentieth century literature: at this regard important reference texts such as “The time Machine” (1895 by HG Wells and “Sound of Thunder” (1952) by R. Bradbury are analyzed. As far as cinema is concerned, “Back to the Future” (1985) by R. Zemeckis is examined, while for TV production, we have “Manifest” (2018-2023) by J. Rake. Despite a limited budget, Doctor Who has proven to be a very succesful series, especially thanks to its ability to represent English culture. The Doctor, in fact, embodies many traditional British values such as altruism, courage, intelligence and rebellion against injustice, bringing to the screen the deepest concerns of the British. At the same time always evolving, for a long period of time of about sixty years. Some brilliant choices by the production are fundamental, such as the regeneration of the Doctor, the ability of his body to regenerate into a new form, allowing the character to continue his adventures throughout the show’s history. This makes the product practically eternal.

La tesi analizza la tematica del viaggio nel tempo, specificatamente nella serie televisiva Doctor Who. Per parlare di Doctor Who è necessario partire dal contesto in cui la serie è nata nel 1963, ovvero la BBC, di cui Doctor Who è diventato uno dei programmi più iconici e longevi. La tesi segue un ordine cronologico nell’analizzare lo sviluppo della serie dagli esordi fino ai giorni nostri, con i suoi vari produttori ed interpreti, le varie tecnologie usate, con i suoi alti e bassi, inclusa la lunga sospensione dal 1989 al 2005. Il focus della tesi è il viaggio nel tempo di Doctor Who, il protagonista, spesso conosciuto semplicemente come “il Dottore”. Il Dottore è un alieno, Signore del Tempo, proveniente dal pianeta di Gallifrey che viaggia attraverso il tempo e lo spazio a bordo del TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) un'astronave camuffata da cabina telefonica blu della polizia britannica. Vengono prese in considerazione le tematiche principali della serie e, a tale scopo, si esaminano approfonditamente due racconti emblematici di Doctor Who: un viaggio nel passato con il serial “The Massacre of Saint Bartholomew’s Eve” (1966) e un viaggio nel futuro con l’episodio “La bestia di sotto” (2010). L’analisi del viaggio nel tempo non si ferma alla serie televisiva britannica ma si allarga anche alla letteratura otto-novecentesca: si analizzano, a questo proposito, importanti testi di riferimento quali “La macchina del Tempo” (1895) di H.G. Wells e “Rumore di Tuono” (1952) di R. Bradbury. Per quanto riguarda il viaggio nel tempo nel cinema si esamina “Ritorno al Futuro” (1985) di R. Zemeckis mentre per il piccolo schermo “Manifest” (2018-2023) di J. Rake. Nonostante un budget limitato, Doctor Who si è rivelata una serie di grandissimo successo, soprattutto grazie alla sua capacità di rappresentare la cultura inglese. Il Dottore, infatti, incarna molti valori britannici tradizionali come l’altruismo, il coraggio, l’intelligenza e la ribellione contro l’ingiustizia, portando sullo schermo le preoccupazioni più profonde degli inglesi. Allo stesso tempo sempre evolvendosi, per un arco temporale di ben sessant’anni. Fondamentali alcune scelte brillanti da parte della produzione, come ad esempio la rigenerazione del protagonista, ovvero la capacità del suo corpo di rigenerarsi in una nuova forma, consentendo al personaggio di continuare le sue avventure nel corso della storia dello show. Ciò rende il prodotto praticamente eterno.
