Femminilità ed Emancipazione in Possessione: una storia romantica di A.S Byatt

This thesis analyses the portrayal of femininity and emancipation in Possession: a Romance by A.S Byatt. Incorporating evidence from the novel itself, critics articles and books regarding the subject, this paper demonstrates the different approaches six women in this novel have towards their independence and feminine side, also considering the mentality present during their periods, Victorian and Contemporary. The introduction reports A.S Byatt’s life, her work, drawing particular attention to Possession: a Romance, and the meaning of the words ‘femininity’ and ‘emancipation’. The first chapter examines three Victorian Women, Christabel LaMotte, Ellen Ash and Blanche Glover, emphasizing key details about their appearance, their lives and the way both of these traits influence their femininity and independence. The second chapter focuses on the Contemporary Women Maud Bailey, Val and Leonora Stern, and follows their personal development and growth during the novel.

Incorporando esempi tratti dal romanzo stesso, articoli critici e libri sull'argomento, questo studio dimostra i diversi approcci che sei donne di questo romanzo hanno nei confronti della propria indipendenza e del proprio lato femminile, tenendo in conto anche la mentalità presente durante le loro epoche, Vittoriana e Contemporanea. L’introduzione riporta la vita di A.S Byatt, la sua opera, soffermandosi in particolare su Possession: a Romance, e il significato delle parole “femminilità” ed “emancipazione”. Il primo capitolo esamina tre donne vittoriane, Christabel LaMotte, Ellen Ash e Blanche Glover, sottolineando i dettagli chiave sul loro aspetto, le loro vite e il modo in cui entrambi questi tratti influenzano la loro femminilità e indipendenza.
