La Death Education e i media: il disegno come medium per parlare del lutto nella scuola primaria

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the effectiveness of drawing as a means of expressing emotions, particularly with regard to feelings about death and mourning. The goal of the intervention was to provide students with the means to be more aware with respect to a topic that, in our society, is still treated as "taboo." The dissertation is divided into two parts: the first, consisting of three theoretical chapters, aims to investigate how the media talk about death on a daily basis in our lives; it then goes on to analyze Death Education and how this discipline has become part of the school curriculum in many states; and finally to make an analysis of the media in general and, more specifically, of drawing as a child's medium. The second part describes the educational intervention conducted in an elementary school aimed at the creation of an illustrated book entitled "The Power of Remembrance" to be sent by the children to one of their peers in other school who recently lost his grandfather and is unable to overcome his grief. Drawing proved to be an effective means to help children express their emotions and ideas about death and make them live this natural experience of life with greater serenity and awareness.

La presente tesi di Laurea si propone di indagare l’efficacia del disegno come mezzo di espressione delle emozioni, in particolare per quanto riguarda i sentimenti che si provano quando si parla di morte e di lutto. L’obiettivo dell’intervento è stato quello di fornire agli studenti i mezzi per essere più consapevoli rispetto ad un argomento che, nella nostra società, è ancora trattato come “tabù”. La tesi si divide in due parti: la prima, formata da tre capitoli teorici, ha come scopo quello di indagare in che modo i media parlano di morte quotidianamente nelle nostre vite; si passa poi ad analizzare la Death Education e come questa disciplina sia entrata a far parte del curricolo scolastico in molti Stati; fino a fare un’analisi sui media in generale e, più nello specifico, sul disegno come medium infantile. La seconda parte descrive l’intervento didattico condotto in una scuola primaria volto alla realizzazione di un albo illustrato dal titolo “Il potere del ricordo” che i bambini dovranno spedire a un loro coetaneo di un’altra sede che ha perso il nonno da poco e non riesce a superare il lutto. Il disegno si è dimostrato un mezzo efficace per aiutare i bambini a esprimere le loro emozioni e idee riguardo alla morte e fargli vivere quest’esperienza naturale della vita con maggiore serenità e consapevolezza.
