The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the recruitment and exploitation of children as combatants in armed conflicts, as well as the extent to which international humanitarian law safeguards their rights. The thesis is structured into three distinct sections. The first section undertakes a thorough examination of the historical origins, defining attributes, and legal frameworks that are crucial in resolving the distressing issue of child soldiers in armed wars. The origins of child soldiering are deeply rooted in the chronicles of mankind's most savage conflicts. The section explores the complex criteria and classifications that establish the concept of a child soldier within legal, humanitarian, and intellectual domains. The second part undertakes a detailed investigation, examining the particular instances of child soldiering in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen, and Colombia—countries deeply impacted by this unfortunate issue. Prior to delving into the specific case studies, the initial section presents an introduction that gives a thorough summary of the frequency, intricacies, and contextual subtleties related to the problem of child soldiers in nations afflicted by conflict. Within the distressing context of armed conflicts, the utilization of children as soldiers is a severe infringement against their fundamental rights, being a tragic occurrence that afflicts nations most impacted by prolonged hostilities. The study aims to uncover the historical origins and complex socio-political factors that have firmly established the occurrence of child soldiering in these nations with high frequency. This research seeks to clarify how various factors, such as historical legacies of conflict and systemic vulnerabilities, make children vulnerable to recruitment and exploitation in armed conflicts. It will examine historical perspectives, socio-economic disparities, and governance challenges to achieve this understanding. In the third part, this thesis aims to examine and assess the effectiveness and influence of international initiatives in dealing with the widespread problem of child soldiers in the nation’s most severely impacted by this grave phenomenon. Analyzing the effectiveness and influence of global initiatives in reducing the occurrence of child soldiers in countries with high incidence and examining the various initiatives led by international organizations, non-governmental organizations, local groups, and governments to address this serious violation of human rights will take part in this research. This study intends to analyze the mechanisms, interventions, and strategies used in these nations to understand the strengths, shortcomings, and potential for transformation of international initiatives in reducing the recruitment and employment of child soldiers. This thesis aims to provide a thorough and multifaceted examination of the feasibility and influence of international initiatives addressing the recruitment and utilization of child soldiers in countries heavily affected by armed conflict. Its purpose is also to provide practical insights by combining historical, legal, socio-political, and humanitarian viewpoints. It advocates for more efficient and focused interventions to protect the rights, well-being, and future of children impacted by armed conflict.
