My dissertation aims to analyse the issue of climate change through the lens of literature, media studies, and socio-cultural studies. The analysis will begin with an examination of Amitav Ghosh's work The Great Derangement to explore how modern literature, history, and politics can help us understand why climate change resists traditional storytelling methods and discover alternative genres that could be used to address the issue. In this section, I will also focus on his work The Hungry Tide to give a clear example of how novels could tackle and express the problem. The thesis will then examine the impact of social media on climate change, thus moving on to media theory and visual cultural studies. By comparing McLuhan's studies on mass media and researching the use of mass media as communication tools, we can understand how social, economic, and cultural factors relate to the climate crisis. In this section, we will analyse the psychology behind the media and the role of images in this field. Images are becoming increasingly relevant in the mass media field, and their relevance is shaping how people interact and react to climate change; thus, bringing media studies into the conversation is becoming increasingly important. From a political perspective, Ghosh argues that the current crisis is not only a climate crisis but also a crisis of imagination linked to the bourgeois mentality of the Anthropocene. This mentality is based on human superiority and control over nature and the non-human. This fails to recognise the non-human as an active part of society and the system in which we live.
