"The Boys", analisi tecnica di come un super diventa cattivo

It is 1938 when, in the world of comic book publishing, a strange individual in tights appears, with a large "S" on his chest, who vows to protect and watch over the inhabitants of Metropolis. We are talking about Superman, the world's first superhero. From that moment on, the world of mass entertainment, starting from publishing up to cinema, will no longer be the same. Supers, from the first half of the 20th century to the present day, have played and continue to play a fundamental role in the lives of all of us, enthralling an audience belonging to every ethnicity, gender and age group. Cinema is the art form that has given life, body and made tangible this world that was previously accessible only through the pages of a comic book. Many productions and adaptations on the stories of these characters have been made, each with its own peculiarities and characteristics. The following thesis aims to analyze the series "The Boys" in its construction and contents. But what is “The Boys”? The series is produced by Amazon in 2019, created by Erik Kripke and based on the comic of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson published by DC Comics and Dynamite Entertainment. The protagonists of the story are "The Boys", a group of former CIA collaborators who decide to fight the supers and the company they work for, Vought International. In this hypothetical reality the antagonists are the supers who abuse their supernatural abilities in order to acquire more and more power and control within the framework of society and with them also Vought himself. So the reckless group of "avengers" (human and without powers) decides to wage a no-holds-barred war against the supers. In this research, some of the most significant moments of the series will be selected and analyzed both from the point of view of their technical construction and contents. Emphasis will be placed on the creation of the series and its adaptation. We will talk about the ways in which the producers and members of the various creative departments approach work in the construction of characters and special effects. The objective of this thesis is to tell the world that lies behind the scenes of the stories that have fascinated us most and that make real what is not.

E’ il 1938 quando, nel mondo dell’editoria a fumetti, appare uno strano individuo in calzamaglia, con una grande “S” sul petto, che giura di proteggere e vegliare sugli abitati di Metropolis. Stiamo parlando di Superman, il primo supereroe al mondo. Da quel momento in poi il mondo dell’intrattenimento di massa, partendo dall’editoria fino ad arrivare al cinema, non sarà più lo stesso. I super, dalla prima metà del 900 fino ai giorni nostri hanno ricoperto e ricoprono un ruolo fondamentale nella vita di tutti noi, appassionando un pubblico appartenente ad ogni etnia, genere e fasce d’età. Il cinema è la forma d’arte che ha dato vita, corpo, reso tangibile questo mondo che prima era fruibile solo attraverso le pagine di un albo a fumetti. Di produzioni e adattamenti sulle storie di questi personaggi ne sono stati fatti tanti, ognuno con le proprie peculiarità e caratteristiche. La seguente tesi si propone di analizzare la serie “The Boys” nella sua costruzione e nei suoi contenuti. Ma cos’è “The Boys”? La serie viene prodotta da Amazon nel 2019, ideata da Erik Kripke e tratto dall’omonimo fumetto di Garth Ennis e Darick Robertson edito da DC Comics e Dynamite Entertainment. I protagonisti della storia sono “The Boys” un gruppo di ex collaboratori della CIA che decidono di combattere i super e la società per la quale lavorano, la Vought International. In questa ipotetica realtà gli antagonisti sono i super che abusano delle loro capacità sovrannaturali al fine di acquisire sempre più potere e controllo tra le maglie della società e con loro anche Vought stesso. Quindi lo scapestrato gruppo di “vendicatori” (umani e senza poteri) decide di intraprendere una guerra senza esclusione di colpi contro i super. In questa ricerca verranno selezionati alcuni tra i momenti più significativi della serie che saranno analizzati sia dal punto di vista della loro costruzione tecnica che dei contenuti. Verrà posto l’accento sull’ideazione della serie e sul suo adattamento. Si parlerà delle modalità di approccio al lavoro da parte dei produttori e dei componenti dei vari reparti creativi nella costruzione dei personaggi e degli effetti speciali. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di raccontare il mondo che si cela dietro le quinte delle storie che più ci hanno appassionato e che rendono reale, ciò che non lo è.
