Cognitività linguistica e linguaggio politico. Frame e metafore nello spazio politico americano

The thesis analyzes the application of cognitive linguistics to the study of politics, in particular how the structures and mental models that implicitly give shape and structure to everyday reasoning are applied to the field of political decision-making. The ultimate aim is to underline how it is possible to manipulate and persuade the common citizen through a series of linguistic and cognitive expedients in order, with a view to politicizing the reference matter, to obtain a specific result. The cornerstone of the thesis is how cognitive linguistics can encompass within it various disciplines which, by amalgamating, can provide a useful tool for analyzing socio-linguistic phenomena, starting for example from a simple discursive analysis of a party candidate to arrive at the structures of a bill to be approved. The first chapter introduces matter which, being the result of the influence of multiple disciplines, tends to be flexible and lack a hard core. The main theories of cognitive science that shape thought and which are intertwined with linguistic and philosophical theories are examined. Mental spaces and Image-Schemas tend to be the two most abstract categories studied by the three disciplines which, through information technology, are partially computationalized and transposed onto a level which makes it easier to arrive at study models of synaptic and neuronal functioning. In the second section we go into more detail using microstructures, mental frames and metaphors, as a tool to mediate between the complexity and abstractness of reasoning and the actual speech act. An example of application is the political one through the study of political discursive strategies that make use of a framework and a toolbox built "ad hoc" for the situation, but also in the case of mental biases, heuristics and nudges, the latter applied especially in the economic sphere. The third and final chapter goes even more into detail, outlining how the application of metaphors and mental frames leads to the use of war rhetoric; drawing on the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the aim is to reconstruct the American war rhetoric that led to the approval of the Patriot Act and consequently to millions of Americans seeing their civil liberties limited. Surveillance, control are the two words in the order of the American "statecraft" of the last sixty years and with it a capitalist realism that has crumbled the American welfare state, pushing for the reproduction of a war capitalism and the approval between the end 1970s and mid-1990s of continuous implementations to increase federal funds for defense, both internal and external. The aim of the thesis is to reconstruct the key points of a self-sustaining subject and which presents itself as a tool for analyzing social phenomena which can then be analyzed in different ways by the subdisciplines that make up this subject.

L’elaborato analizza l’applicazione della linguistica cognitiva allo studio della politica, in particolare come le strutture e i modelli mentali che implicitamente danno forma e struttura ai ragionamenti di tutti i giorni siano applicati al campo della decisione politica. Lo scopo ultimo è sottolineare come sia possibile manipolare e persuadere il cittadino comune attraverso una serie di espedienti linguistici e cognitivi al fine, in un’ottica di politicizzazione della materia di riferimento, ottenere un determinato risultato. Perno dell’elaborato è come la linguistica cognitiva possa racchiudere al suo interno diverse discipline che amalgamandosi possono fornire un utile strumento di analisi dei fenomeni socio-linguistici, partendo ad esempio da una semplice analisi discorsiva di un candidato di un partito per giungere alle strutture di un disegno di legge affinché sia approvato. Il primo capitolo introduce la materia che essendo il risultato dell’influenza di più discipline tra loro tende ad essere flessibile e venire meno di un nucleo duro. Si esaminano le principali teorie delle scienze cognitive che danno forma al pensiero e che si intrecciano con le teorie linguistiche e filosofiche. Spazi mentali e Image-Schema tendono ad essere le due categorie più astratte e studiate dalle tre discipline che attraverso l’informatica vengono parzialmente computazionalizzate e trasposte su un piano per cui risulta più semplice giungere a dei modelli di studio sul funzionamento sinaptico e neuronale. Nella seconda sezione si entra più nello specifico utilizzando microstrutture, frame mentali e metafore, come strumento per mediare tra la complessità e astrattezza del ragionamento e l’effettivo atto locutorio. Un esempio di applicazione è quello politico attraverso lo studio delle strategie discorsive politiche che fanno uso di un framework e di una cassetta degli attrezzi costruita “ad hoc” per la situazione, ma anche nel caso di bias mentali, euristiche e nudge, questi ultimi applicati soprattutto nell’ambito economico. Il terzo ed ultimo capitolo entra ancora più nel preciso, andando a delineare come l’applicazione di metafore e frame mentali sfoci nell’utilizzo di retoriche belliche; facendo capo alla tragedia dell’11 settembre 2001 lo scopo è quello di ricostruire la retorica di guerra americana che ha fatto sì che il Patriot Act fosse approvato e di conseguenza che milioni di americani vedessero le proprie libertà civili limitate. Sorveglianza controllo sono le due parole all’ordine dello “statecraft” americano degli ultimi sessant’anni e con esso un realismo capitalista che ha sgretolato lo stato sociale statunitense spingendo per la riproduzione di un capitalismo di guerra e l’approvazione tra le fine degli anni ‘70 e la metà degli anni ‘90 del ‘900 di continue implementazioni per l’aumento dei fondi federali destinati alla difesa, sia interna sia esterna. Il fine dell’elaborato è quello di ricostruire i punti chiave di una materia che si autoalimenta e che si propone come strumento di analisi dei fenomeni sociali poi analizzabili in diversi modi dalle sottodiscipline che compongono questa materia.
