The Witcher: analisi della traduzione italiana della saga fantasy e confronto con la versione inglese

This thesis will discuss Andrzej Sapkowski's famous fantasy saga The Witcher, which tells the story of the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia and all the adventures he faces along his path. Specifically, I will focus on the English and Italian translations of the first book, Il guardiano degli innnocenti (The Last Wish), which is a collection of short stories. The anthology consists of seven short stories, each of which forms a story in its own right; it begins with a story that serves as a frame for the other chapters and these are remembered throughout the volume. Thus, at the end of each story, there is a reprise and continuation of the tale in which the protagonist recalls some recent episodes. The objective pursued in this work is to understand which translation strategies were employed in both versions and make a comparison. In order to identify and recognize the different procedures used, the argument of the translation theories was introduced describing the main techniques. Consequently, since this is a fantasy novel, the literary genre was discussed briefly before moving on to the peculiar narrative genre of this saga: fantasy, precisely. Finally, there is the text analysis where all the translation strategies used are exemplified.

Questa tesi parlerà della famosa saga fantasy The Witcher di Andrzej Sapkowski che narra la storia del cacciatore di mostri Geralt di Rivia e di tutte le avventure che affronta lungo il suo percorso. Nello specifico, mi concentrerò sulle traduzioni inglese e italiana del primo libro, Il guardiano degli innocenti (The last wish), che corrisponde a una raccolta di racconti. L’antologia si compone di sette racconti, ognuno dei quali forma una storia a sé stante; inizia con un racconto che funge da cornice agli altri capitoli e questi ultimi vengono ricordati nel corso del volume. Perciò alla fine di ogni vicenda vi è la ripresa e la continuazione del racconto in cui il protagonista rammenta alcuni episodi recenti. L’obiettivo perseguito in questo lavoro è quello di comprendere quali strategie traduttive sono state impiegate in entrambe le versioni e fare una comparazione. Al fine di individuare e riconoscere le diverse procedure adoperate è stata introdotta l’argomentazione delle teorie della traduzione descrivendone le principali tecniche. Conseguentemente, trattandosi di un romanzo fantasy, si è discusso del genere letterario in modo sommario per poi spostarsi al genere narrativo peculiare di questa saga: il fantasy, precisamente. Infine, vi è l’analisi del testo dove vengono esemplificate tutte le strategie traduttive utilizzate.
