Attraverso l'Armadio: Analisi della Storia e delle Performance delle Drag Queen negli Stati Uniti del Sud

The art of drag, which stemmed mostly from the LGBTQ+ community and its revendications of civil rights, has long fascinated anthropologists and scholars for its ability to break gender stereotypes and reveal their contradictions. In this theses I analysed literary and television works of several drag queens from the United States South, a particularly conservative and religious region where racial, sexual, and sexist discrimination are often present, to show how this art form developed there and how it can be linked to Southern culture. Among the artists considered are Rachel Wells, from Atlanta, predominantly active in the Seventies – its artist, John Greenwell, currently works as an author of plays, novels and short stories, some of which are analysed in this essay; The Lady Chablis, brought to the mainstream with the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and its movie adaptation, active mostly in Savannah in the Eighties and Nineties; RuPaul, an extremely successful artist since the Nineties; Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara, and Shangela, competitors in RuPaul’s Drag Race and hosts of the reality tv-show We’re Here.

L’arte drag da tempo affascina antropologi e studiosi per la sua capacità di scardinare gli stereotipi di genere e mostrarne le contraddizioni, in un contesto prevalentemente legato alla comunità LGBTQ+ e alle sue rivendicazioni. In questa tesi sono analizzate le opere letterarie e televisive di alcune drag queen del sud degli Stati Uniti, territorio particolarmente conservatore, religioso e legato a discriminazioni razziali, sessuali e di genere, per mostrare come questo tipo di arte vi si sia manifestato e come si leghi alla cultura dell’American South. Prese in esame sono Rachel Wells, di Atlanta, attiva prevalentemente negli anni Settanta – il suo interprete, John Greenwell, è attualmente autore di testi teatrali, romanzi e novelle, alcuni dei quali analizzati in questo testo; The Lady Chablis, salita alla ribalta con il romanzo e il film “Mezzanotte nel Giardino del Bene e del Male”, attiva a Savannah negli anni Ottanta e Novanta; RuPaul, artista dal grande successo dagli anni Novanta a oggi; Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara e Shangela, protagoniste della competizione “RuPaul’s Drag Race” e del reality “We’re Here”.
