The Advantages Of Bilingualism: A Focus On Cognitive And Linguistic Development

The problem of researching the relation between bilingualism and cognitive development raises two controversial issues. Firstly, it is important to give the definition and description of bilingualism. Secondly, it is important to find out how bilingualism influence on cognitive development. Does bilingualism facilitate the development of cognitive abilities, and if so, how? Thus, the primary purpose of this study consists in the accurate description of bilingualism. Secondly, this study aimed to trace the connection between bilingualism and cognitive development. The main hypothesis of this study relates to review the cause-effect issue in order to understand the influential factors and mechanisms of bilingualism that ameliorate and accelerate the cognitive development giving advantages to bilingual speakers. By means of theoretical research and the conduction of practical experiments the analysis of bilingual influence on cognitive development is given.
