History is a fundamental part of humanity. It allows us to know what happened in the past and who triggered those events, but it also allows us to understand if our feelings and experiences are something entirely new or if at any point in the past someone else has already felt or experienced such things. So many are drawn to the allure of history due to this reason. This thesis deals with the partial translation of a historical essay, City and Community in Norman Italy by Paul Oldfield. The book examined in this paper presents an approach to Italy's past, specifically to a part of Italy, that is not much taught. As Oldfield himself says, when discussing Italy's past, specifically the Middle Ages, we tend to focus a little too much on the central and northern part of the peninsula. Oldfield decided to challenge this in his book, accumulating in his work all the latest but fragmented research on the subject along with his own research, integrated with some ancient documents he was able to find. Although Oldfield's work is about the Italians of yore, it is written in English. Henceforth, the idea to translate this work, obviously partially given the volume, sprung forth to do justice to the author in the very country he is talking about.

La storia è una parte fondamentale del nostro essere umani. Non solo permette di sapere che cosa è avvenuto in passato e chi è stata la causa di tali avvenimenti ma permette anche di capire se ciò che una persona sente o prova, in un qualsiasi momento della sua vita, è stato già sentito o provato da qualcun altro. È per questo motivo che in così tanti sono attirati dal fascino della storia. Questa tesi si occupa della traduzione parziale di un saggio storico, City and Community in Norman Italy di Paul Oldfield. Il libro preso in esame in questo lavoro presenta un approccio al passato dell’Italia, nello specifico a un pezzo di Italia, che non è molto insegnato. Come dice pure Oldfield, quando si parla del passato dell’Italia, nello specifico del Medioevo, si tende a concentrarsi sulla parte centrale e settentrionale della penisola. Oldfield decide di sfidare nel suo libro questo “fenomeno”, riunendo in un solo libro le informazioni delle ricerche moderne ma frammentate sull’argomento con la sua ricerca in cui integra con i documenti antichi che è riuscito a trovare. Nonostante il lavoro di Oldfield parli degli italiani del passato, è in inglese. Si è pensato quindi di tradurre questo lavoro, ovviamente parzialmente data la mole, per rendere giustizia all’autore nel paese di cui parla.
