Incidenti stradali: estrazione di informazioni e analisi da referti clinici

This work introduces a system aimed at extracting information from Emergency Room reports, and to analyze such data. After a brief overview of the content and structure of electronic health records related to road accidents and traffic-related injuries, we illustrate a system for the extraction of relevant data from unstructured text. More specifically, we tried to identify: the vehicles involved in an accident, the one in which the patient was in and, finally, the injured body regions. Such data were then used to enrich our initial dataset and to possibly collect new useful statistical insights (e.g. the percentage of patients in a given age range involved in an accident while inside a given vehicle) that may be of interest to various and diverse purposes, such as assisting clinical staff in compiling medical records, and supporting the design of policies to prevent or reduce road accidents and to alleviate their associated economic and social costs.
