La tesi mette a confronto le danzatrici Ruth St. Denis e Jamila Salimpour. Entrambe hanno prodotto danze ispirate all'Oriente e ai suoi miti. Inoltre sono entrambe considerate le capostipiti di due generi di danza che sono oggi parte dell'espressione culturale delle società moderne. Per lo svolgimento della tesi è stato considerato il contesto storico e politico, è stato analizzato il termine ¿Orientalismo¿ e i prodotti culturali ad esso correlati. È stato inoltre considerato il potere delle immagini sul pubblico occidentali. È stata tracciata la storia della danza nel mondo occidentale, dal Settecento al Novecento, è stata anche tracciata la storia più recente della danza in Egitto. Ruth St. Denis viene analizzata per la sua formazione e i suoi prodotti coreografici. Viene messo in rilievo il metodo della scuola Denishawn, fondata insieme a Ted Shawn che ha creato la modern dance. Jamila Salimpour viene analizzata per la sua formazione e la produzione dello spettacolo Bal Anat, inserito all'interno della Renaissance Pleasure Faire, evento che ha fatto parte della controcultura americana degli anni Sessanata e Settanta. Viene analizzato come il lavoro di Jamila abbia contribuito alla nascita di un'ulteriore forma di danza in California, nominata tribal e vengono messi in rilievo i parallelismi con la modern dance.
This work compares the dancers Ruth St. Denis and Jamila Salimpour. They both created dances inspired by the East and the myths of the East. Also they're considered the founders of two genres of dance which are now part of the modern societies. It's been considered the history and politic context. It's been analysed the term ¿Orientalism¿ and the cultural products related to it. It's also been considered the power of the images on the western public. It's been traced the history of dance in west world, from the Eighteenth century to the twentieth century, also it's been traced the most recent history of dance in Egypt. Ruth St. Denis is been analysed for her formation and her choreography products . It's been hightlighted the pedagogical method of the Denishawn, the School she founded with Ted Shawn creating what is been called modern dance. Jamila Salimpour is been analysed for her formation and for the production of Bal Anat, a show part of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, part of the American counterculture of the Sixties-Seventies. It's been considered also how the work of Jamila Salimpour contributed to the birth of a new kind of dance in California, named tribal and similarities are highlighted.
