L’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di fornire una proposta di traduzione letteraria dall’inglese all’italiano. Il testo in questione è “The Haunted Ceiling” di H. G. Wells, scritto tra il 1890 e il 1896. Si tratta di un racconto rimasto inedito per molto tempo.
La tesi si divide in tre capitoli: nel primo vengono illustrate la figura di H. G. Wells e la produzione letteraria di genere fantascientifico e non solo, dando particolare enfasi al romanzo “The History of Mr Polly”. Nel secondo capitolo viene presentata la proposta di traduzione del racconto inedito “The Haunted Ceiling”, mentre nel terzo capitolo viene analizzata la trama del testo in questione, con inserimento di una breve nota alla traduzione.
The focus of this thesis is the literary translation from English to Italian of the short story “The Haunted Ceiling”, written by H. G. Wells at the end of the XIX century. The author never published the story: in fact, it was found in an archive in the library of the University of Illinois, US nearly a century after Wells wrote it.
The study is divided in three sections. Chapter I is about H. G. Wells as author, novelist, and creator of science fiction. Also, the novel “The History of Mr Polly” is described in detail. Chapter II is focused on the translation (from English to Italian) of the short story “The Haunted Ceiling”, while details about the plot and the strategies used during the translation process are discussed in chapter III.
